Labour-use pattern on Swiss dairy farmsOriginal Paper

Abstract: Analysing the labour-use pattern on Swiss dairy farms, we apply a typology scheme with two criteria: on-farm wage labour and off-farm family labour. The resultant four farm types are analysed based on the data from the Swiss Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) as well as the spatial data on available jobs. Only 17% of dairy farms have neither on-farm wage labour nor off-farm family labour. 60 % have family members involved in off-farm activities. During time, a more attention was paid to the sustainability indicators. While formerly they regarded only the environment area, gradually they were extended also to the social, economic and institutional sphere. However, their use is rather problematic in developing countries the majority of which was not persuaded of their importance. Developing countries also often reason that they have not the relevant data to their disposal.

World trade underwent a significant shock within the recent years, which caused a decline in the world economy primarily in the year 2009. Within the following years (2010 and 2011), the high rate of growth from the years preceding the crisis could not be restored. The crisis had an impact on all segments of the merchandise trade, whereby the trade in agricultural and food products was affected the least by the crisis.
