Population problem in the future - challenges, questions

Vladimír JENÍČEK

Agric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(3):97-107 | DOI: 10.17221/91/2009-AGRICECON

Population regulation cannot be left just to wars, epidemics and famines in future. A mutual cooperation is necessary to accept suitable measures helping to decrease, or at least to sustain, the population at the desirable level and at the same time to improve life conditions of many inhabitants of the Earth. The mankind has the necessary knowledge and means to find the right solution. The belief into a better future is the driving force of the necessary steps. A decisive role is played by the population transition. Its first phase, which still prevails in some regions, started the exponential increase of the Earth population. In the second phase,...

Agric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(3):108-115 | DOI: 10.17221/10/2010-AGRICECON

Analysis of the productivity and efficiency development could be used to asses the trend and factors influencing this process. The main goal of this paper is estimation of the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) development of agricultural farms in the Trnava region in the period 2002-2006. Results of this analysis could be used to detect the trend in the TFP development. The results of the analysis confirmed there is no evident trend in the average TFP indicators. This could be explained by the variation of technical efficiency change and technological changes during this period. These two factors represent the components of the TFP indicator. According...

Polish cooperative banking sector in the face of systemic transformation and European integration in agriculture

Tomasz Siudek

Agric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(3):116-134 | DOI: 10.17221/102/2009-AGRICECON

In this study the principal changes in Polish cooperative banking sector over the past two decades were presented. The primary data obtained from a survey of bank presidents, performed in 2007 on a nation-wide sample of 100 cooperative banks, were supplemented by the banking statistics from the Central Statistical Office and the Polish Financial Supervision. Research provides the evidence that cooperative banks, in general, took advantages from the consolidation process. While the number of the banks was declining, own funds per bank, bank offices and staff were expanding. The banks managed to adjust to the EU requirements by having implemented limits...

Acreage response of paddy in Malaysia

Agric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(3):135-140 | DOI: 10.17221/54/2009-AGRICECON

This study investigated the relative impacts of various factors on acreage response of paddy by analyzing time series data of 1961-2007 via first difference logarithmic functional form of linear Nerlovian expectation model. It is apparent that future paddy price can be identical like previous year. Farmers, therefore, do not have additional incentives to adjust to desired paddy planted area. This scenario is further illustrated by farmers' inelastic response to government supports (incentives). Paddy planted area is not likely to be responsive to the incentives. Paddy price is found associated with higher production cost and may result in a shrink...

Assessing pure technical efficiency of dairy farms in Turkey

Agric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(3):141-148 | DOI: 10.17221/3127-AGRICECON

Compared with results from other studies of dairy farm production in developing countries, this study finds that the samples of 132 dairy farmers in Burdur province, Turkey, are producing at a low level of technical efficiency. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, technical efficiency ranges from 28.6 to 100.0%, with the average being 64.2%. Forage feed and labor inputs are used most inefficiently. A statistically significant, positive relationship between a herd size and efficiency underscore the importance of larger herd size to catch benefit of scale economics. This study also finds no statistically significant relationship between contact with extension...
